What woman hasn’t dealt with or at least been witness to the dreaded cat call? While some men have perfected the art with troves of creative one-liners, most still rely on the classics like “hey baby going my way” or “look at here sweet lips” and let’s not forget the sweet sound of whistling and those equally melodic kissing sounds.
Brooklyn-based artist Tatyana Fazlalizadeh is addressing the issue in her newest project titled “Stop Telling Women to Smile.” Fazlalizadeh displays portraits of women from varying backgrounds in the streets of Philadelphia and Brooklyn with captions directed towards cat callers. “Critiques on my body are not welcome” and “Women are not seeking your validation” are some of my favorite phrases. Thanks for getting the word out about this enduring issue, Fazlalizadeh!
I’m curious, how do you deal with cat callers?
