Marina Abramovic and Ulay once shared an all-consuming love affair in the 70s but once their feelings began to wane, they made the hopelessly romantic yet tragic decision to walk the Great Wall of China, each from one end, meeting each other in the middle for one last embrace and never seeing each other again.
Until this chance meeting at her 2010 MoMa art performance, “The Artist is Present, ” in which she sat in a chair and stared longingly into the eyes of strangers, unaware that her long lost love would be present. Their reaction to seeing one another again is so hauntingly powerful and bitter sweet.
It brought a tear to my eye. Yes, a single teardrop streaming down my face — those are always so much more poignant.
