Although I’m very disciplined about my skincare routine, I knew there were steps I could be taking to nourish my skin from the inside as well. I heard about the many benefits of collagen and had even seen the ingredient listed on many skincare products over the years — so logically, ingesting it was the next step.
First, here’s what you need to know about collagen
Collagen is a protein that keeps the skin plump and smooth. It also aids in the reduction of joint pain, stiffness and inflammation. It’s found naturally in the body, particularly in the skin, bones and connective tissues.
Most people will begin experiencing collagen depletion in their early twenties — leaving them more susceptible to fine lines, wrinkles and a loss in skin volume. Adding it to your diet is supposed to help delay the aging process.
How I’ve been using collagen for the past seven months
I add one teaspoon of collagen powder to a glass of lemon water each morning. Since it’s virtually tasteless, I even sprinkle it on my oatmeal. I began noticing results almost immediately. Within the span of one week, I felt more energized. I have a few fine lines at the corners of my eyes and believe me when I say, I barely notice them anymore. Also, my nails are growing like weeds. This stuff works!
FYI: My mother began incorporating collagen into her regimen around the same time I did and stresses that it’s most effective when taken on an empty stomach. However, researchers are saying it’s just as effective when taken with food.
