Bras are not the most comfortable undergarments, yet, I sleep with one every night. Growing up, my mother would insist that I go to bed wearing one to prevent sagging. To this day, I still hear her voice in my head come night time.
Well, It’s finally time to separate myth from fiction. Does sleeping with a bra on really yield perkier boobs. First, it’s important to understand that sagging is the result of a variety of factors such as pregnancy and breastfeeding — as well as time and gravity.
According to experts, there’s no solid evidence proving that going to sleep wearing a bra is either helpfulĀ or harmful.
Here’s what Mia Talmor, M.D., a member of the Division of Plastic Surgery at the New York Presbyterian Hospital, told Self Magazine during an interview on the topic.
Bras are designed to help with vertical positioning, which basically means they keep your breasts in the upright position. But when you’re lying down, you need more horizontal support, and that’s because they tend to (as some of you might already know) dangle in the direction of your armpits. Still, other experts continue to claim that some support is better than none at all because it will minimize strain and stretch on breast tissues.
If you’re like me and have been sleeping with a bra on every night, by all means, continue to do so. Just make sure your bra isn’t too tight because it can thwart the flow of lymphatic fluid to the breasts — which can cause inflammation.
